What shall I say?
All things shall pass away.
But in the course of time
I find no one who will stand firm
--not giving in to selfish want,
and worldly gain at every turn.
Where are they all;
those who say that they belong to You;
who count their own desires as loss;
who gladly, faithfully, consistently,
take up their cross to follow You?
What can I say?
All things will pass away.
Perhaps in time You'll find Your chosen few;
who will lose their lives for Your sake,
and not look back--but stay the course,
and follow You.
- Matthew 16:24-26 -
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
- Philippians 3:7-9 -
But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
